My hope for this “small” charger for my iPhone Pro Max was that it would be a great alternative to the lipstick chargers and USB-Lightning cable I currently use. Well, it is an alternative. Examine the circumstance in which you are using the charger to determine if this is the right one for you.
This charger is a bit heavy (3.5oz or 99 grams). It is 3 1/8″ x 1.5″ x 1″. Combined with my phone and lightweight case the total block in my pocket weighed about 13 oz, nearly 1 pound. The charger connects directly into the lightning port of your iPhone. While using this charger at your desk or when placed on a table this is fine alternative to corded chargers. However, to use on the go, with it in your pocket or handbag is not a good idea IMO. While the connection snicks solidly into the phone it really isn’t robust enough to prevent accidental disconnections. First, the heavy charger disconnected from my phone multiple times while it was in my front pocket. Secondly, I am concerned that the heavy charger might eventually loosen or damage the lightning port as it wiggles around if used in your pocket, etc. If you sit or move and the charger is pushed to one side it may damage the port because there is no play between the two devices. If the charger twists in your pocket, either the phone twists with it or the lightning port takes the pressure of the twist. The advantage to a corded charger over this is the the cord is lightweight and pliable and doesn’t put any pressure on the lightning port when moved so the chances of damage to it from moving around are nominal. Not so with this one.
Performance: Test 1: topping off my 88% battery with the charger at 100% took 50 minutes and left the charger with 79% left. A subsequent test to recharge my 64% battery with the charger at 100% took 1hr 20 min to fully recharge the phone and left the charger at 52%. Given these results I estimate that you might get a full charge with a depleted phone battery but it will be close. Speed wise it performed along the same lines as the lipstick chargers I use.
The last downside to this charger is that the cap to the lightning port connector is not attached to the charger. You may lose it at some point as it is quite small. That will expose the connectors which increases the possibility of damage to it. But on the positive side the charger does come with a small pouch to store it, the cap, and its small USB to USB-C cord. So you have to be diligent with the cap.
Overall, depending upon your intended use situations, this charger is an even swap to a corded charger. It’s nice since you just have to plug the unit directly into the phone and don’t have to deal with a cord. This would be an ideal charger to have if the phone is sitting in place, in a stationary setting. However, if you are on the move the fact that it disconnects from the phone easily due to its weight and the potential for damage to the lightning port from being jostled about would make me choose a corded charger over this one in this situation. Six in one hand, half a dozen in the other based on your intended usage.
